The correct climatology term should’ve been El Nina in Australia but monsoon is more descriptive. While the rest of the group dashed back to the safety of their cars Caleb, Nat and I crouched under a rock and enjoyed watching the rain spattering the sand.

A man comes jogging past and we yell out at him that he’s crazy caus there’s thunderstorms but he doesn’t hear us. We watch him run around the bend to the rockpools and he just stops and stands there for several minutes. We have no idea what this guy has injected himself with but we keep an eye on him in case he gets swept up in the waves.

He starts jogging back in our direction. As he passes us he yells that there’s a koala on the beach. We think he’s totally shitting us but curiosity overcomes logic and we venture out into the downpour to check out his crazy claim. Lo and behold, on the rocks is a lone, grumpy and very soggy koala. We try and get close but the closer we get the more it tenses its claws.

For anyone not aware, Koalas rarely venture out from their natural habitat of Eucalyptus trees and forest floors. They occasionally cross country highways and become roadkill but seeing one on the beach is extremely rare.

We snap some quick pics using my phone and seeing as it’s scared of us and it’s still bucketing we leave it and head back to my car. We went back the next day to check if it, or worse, it body was still there but it had long gone. Here’s to hoping it made it back to its tree safe and sound.

Went hiking to the peak of Cradle Mountain in Tasmania last...

Went hiking to the peak of Cradle Mountain in Tasmania last Christmas with the rents. “Why should the NRA...

POST AURORA: NRA Please Explain

“Why should the NRA [(National Rifle Association)] have anything to say about this tragedy? As we all know, guns don’t kill people, people kill people. This tells us something striking about Americans, by the way, because the average American is 40 times more likely to be killed by gunfire than the average Englishman or Canadian. According to the NRA, this has nothing to do with the fact that guns proliferate in America and are scarce in England and Canada. We just have to face the facts: Americans, unlike Englishmen and Canadians, are murderous by nature. The ready availability of assault weapons has nothing to do with it.

If the United States had the same gun murder rate as England or Canada, approximately 8,500 American men, women and children who were slaughtered by gunfire in 2011 might still be alive today. If the United States had the same gun murder rate as England since 2000, 100,000 murdered American men, women and children might still be alive today.

Of course, it is not only the NRA and its supporters who are accountable for this sorrowful state of affairs. It is also our elected representatives in Congress who have persistently lacked the common sense and courage to renew the federal assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. This is, by any reasonable measure, a grievous failure of responsible governance.

In the face of this national tragedy, President Obama says this is not the time for politics but for prayer. But this is the time for politics, before we do what we always do after such massacres — shed some tears, express our grief, say a few prayers, and then quickly go on to do what the NRA wants us to do — change the subject.”

Extract from “Guns Don’t Kill” by Geoffrey R. It was comprised of approximately 8,000 donated books from the Salvation Army sprawled along the ground of Fed Square which by day asked questions and by night drew wonder as the books literally lit up. I assisted several times throughout the month to make the lights by taping LEDs to litihium battery cells, pasting them in between the pages of the books and then laying them out on the ground.

On the final day we literally blocked one lane of traffic on Flinders St by extending the exhibition onto the street. That was when it really started getting interesting and people began gathering to see what all the chaos was about. We had dancers doing crazy but awesome stuff with the books, we had random people asking us if they could help place the books out and then in the final hours of the night we started informing people they could take as many books as they wanted home as we would be recycling them otherwise. Word sure travels fast through the city because soon there was a mob of people sifting through the thousands of books to find ones they could take home. There were girls screaming when they found copies of Twilight, mothers sneakily tucking Mills & Boon into their handbags and grown men picking up classics.

Being involved in this installation was truly an amazing experience and reminded me of how art can excite people and get them thinking. The number one question I had throughout the night from passerbys was the ‘what is it?’ question. To check out more work by luzinterruptus visit their blog http://www.luzinterruptus.com/ which is in both English and Espanol.

I did a quick sketch of Lana Del Rey a while back and only just...

I did a quick sketch of Lana Del Rey a while back and only just got around to photoshopping it.
